"With this exhibition, I was attempting to expand the definition of "art"  to make it less conventional, less snobby, more casual and accessible to everyone."  Beat Takeshi Kitano.

Watchproducer Cartier has since 1984 shown enthusiasm for contemporary artists whom distinguish themselves. The firm has done this by exhibiting the artists in the firms'  location in Paris. Fondation Cartier was founded for what Cartier claims is to stimulate pioneers in international contemporary art. At their website one can read the following:

For Cartier, patronage is not just a one-time deal based on current trends and movements, but an enduring choice that is constantly reaffirmed.

This time it is the actor Beat Takeshi, or artist Takehi Kitano, whos talent is put into view in a multifaceted presentation. The Japanese multitalent has gotten international attention through diverging films such as Sonatine, Hana-bi and Zatôichi, but is in his home country just as known as a tv-star and an entertainer. He is also a painter and writer.

The exhibition Cartier pour ’art contemporain is a rare project as Kitano basicly has turned down any inquiry of exhibitions. This is a project custom-made for Cartier, and is targeted towards youth and kids. According to the firms' website the exhibition will last until September, and will include pictures, videos, bizarre gadgets, and fantastic machines. Kitano guides the spectators through suprises, games and entertainment as he mocks contemporary art, and plays with clichées related to his home country, Japan.

Takeshi Kitano is also of current interest as a participant in the official competition-proramme in Cannes, this with the film Outrage.
