Films from the South shares the nation's grief and sends many warm thoughts to all who are affected by the tragedy in the government quarter and on Utøya.
Prime minister Jens Stoltenberg underlines that the griefing society also has to move on and create stronger bonds in the struggle against those opinions that the perpetrator represents. Therefore, Films from the South, together with OsloKino, has decided to hold the screening of Habana Eva at Vika kino tonight as planned.
“To communicate stories from each others' cultures becomes an even more important contribution to demystify differences and demonstrate sameness between us”, says artistic leader at Films from the South, Lasse Skagen, after the tragedy which struck the country and many people on friday, july 22nd. Condolences have come streaming in to the country from all parts of the world. Also director friends of Films from the South have sent their words fo sympathy. Amongst others, the Afghan director Siddiq Barmak (who was a guest at FFS 2010) writes in an email:
“It was a big shock for all of us specially Afghan filmmakers hearing terrible news from Oslo. Please accept our condolences for the huge loss and tragedy. We afghans feeling your pain and sorrow deeply more that others because we are facing every day this horrible situation. It was really unacceptable for all civilize nations ! It was real madness and wild action against Human being! It shows that all kind of fundamentalism and extremism could distort all peaceful ideas and damage our peaceful world. we are shoulder to shoulder with our friends in Norway. I hope you never faced these tragedies again.”
“July 22nd 2011 will never be forgotten, and marks a parting of the ways in the fighting against extremism, whichever direction it comes from” concludes Skagen, and invites to use culture as a channel of communication for better understanding of each others' experiences and thoughts about life; for better or worse. Which ever part of the world you come from.
