French artist JR’s visually unique documentary Women Are Heroes is officially part of the Dok:Sør programme for this year’s Film fra Sør festival. The film is a travelogue of urban activist JR’s journey through Africa, Asia and South America. He anonymously and secretly transforms streets, buildings, slums, favelas and whole cities into large art galleries.
Local populations are exposed to art they would have usually never experienced if it hadn’t come to them. What are JR’s motivations for doing so? Here is what he has to say on the project we follow through Women Are Heroes:
– I touch upon some important themes. Women Are Heroes reveals women who have survived through near-death experiences, but embrace life anyway and turn tears into laughter. These are generous women who own nothing, but are still willing to share. They have a painful past but are determined to build a bright future for themselves. These women deserve to be seen.
JR ‘owns’ the largest art gallery in the world, but taking art out of the museums to the people in the street is where his main motivation lies. He won the prestigious TED Award in 2011, check out this compelling video interview to see why.
We are really looking forward to show this colourful, moving and incredibly visual documentary as part of this year’s festival.
