Kid's Corner - Adventures from all over the world

Films from the South is not only for grown-ups! Last year, we had for the first time a children film programme in cooperation with Barnas Cinematek (the Children Cinematheque), and this year our children programme is twice as big.

We have set aside the mornings of both weekends of the festival in order to show great children films from around the world. Screenings will take place at the Cinematheque and cater for both young children (3-5) and slightly less young ones (5-10). All films will be screened in Norwegian, and we can promise a very child-friendly ticket price! In other words, a perfect opportunity for a cosy family outing this autumn.

The two films shown for the youngest children are Tinga Tinga Tales (Tinga Tinga-fortellinger) and My Neighbour Totoro (Min Nabo Totoro). Tinga Tinga Tales is a collection of exciting African adventures exploring why animals look the way they do. Do you know for example why has the snake no leg? Why doesn’t the hippo have any hair? Why is the bat hanging upside down or why has the owl such good eyesight? Tinga Tinga Tales gives you creative and funny answers to the questions you didn’t know you wondered about.

My Neighbour Totoro is one of the finest Japanese animation films directed by world famous director Hayao Miyazaki. It tells the story of two sisters, Mei and Satsuki, who move with their father to a village outside Tokyo, and find out that their closest neighbour is the great and magical god of the forest who is only visible to them.

For the slightly older audience, we are very proud to present two completely new children films. The first one is Tales of the Night, the new film from the man behind Kirikou and the Sorceress (Kirikou og Trollkvinnen) and Princes and Princesses (Prinser og Prinsesser). Here we follow a boy and a girl who embark on an adventure around the world. We travel to Nepal and Africa, China and the Caribbean, and meet princes, princesses, monsters and fighters. This is a truly beautiful experience for the whole family.

Last but not least, we are extremely happy to be able to present Arrietty (Arrietta), the newest film from Studio Ghibli, with Miyazaki as a screenwriter. The film is based on Mary Norton’s famous 1950s children book The Borrowers (Lånerne) and follows the tiny Arrietty who, along her equally small family, lives under the floor of a big and beautiful house. Everything they own, they have borrowed: water, food, electricity, furniture. They only borrow a little each time in order for no one to notice. But life in constant anonymity is not easy. And what will happen once they are discovered? This is an exciting and magical film for children and grown-ups.

Before each film there will be a small introduction to prepare the children for the exciting adventure that lies ahead. So set the dates in the calendar and take the kids to the cinema. Nobody is too young for Films from the South!
