Films From the South and The Norwegian Film Institute welcome you to the Tatsumi Exhibition 2011 from October 7th – 16th.
– I have been a fan of Yoshihiro Tatsumi’s comics for over two decades, the Singaporean director Eric Khoo says about the Japanese manga artist whose life and artwork serve as material for Khoo’s latest feature Tatsumi.
The result of Khoo’s fascination for one of Japan’s most renowned manga artists is a sparkling animated portrait mixing both Tatsumis own autobiography and artwork in an elegant manner.
In the 1950s Tatsumi developed the so-called gekiga-style of Japanese comic art, printed his artistic manifesto on 150 postcards and sent it to the newspapers. He pioneered a breakthrough in modern Japanese comics, elevating the genre to a whole new level of creative expression by distancing it from the dominating manga mainly aimed at a younger audience.
Eric Khoo is one of the main guests at this year’s Films From the South. In corporation with the Norwegian Film Institute we are happy to invite our audience to The Tatsumi Exhibition 2011.
The exhibition will present still photos from Tatsumi and from the production of the film, aiming to give our audience an exclusive opportunity to delve into the great artistic universe of both the manga artist and the film director.
At the exhibition opening on October 7th you will get the chance to meet Eric Khoo and hear his experiences from working with Tatsumi himself and his thoughts on film making and directing.
– After reading Tatsumi’s 800 pages autobiographic comic book A Drifting Life back in 2009 I kept thinking about it night after night. I went back to his older stories and re-read them all and the idea of making a film about him kept living inside of me. I just had to get the idea out, Khoo says about the reason for making a tribute film to one of the grand masters in Japanese manga.
