Hong Kong 1962: Chau and his wife moves into a new important where Chau meets Li-Chun who moves in the same day. Their respective partners are away the whole time and they spend more and more time together. Gradually, Chau and Li-Chun realise that their spouses perhaps have something to hide.
With this film, Wong Kar-wai cemented his position as perhaps the brightest star on the Asian film firmament. In addition to being an aesthetic pleasure, it is a deeply romantic film. The relationship between Chau and Li-Chun is depicted with a discreet dignity. All proper action happens between the scenes, and as usual in Wong, form and content combine into a higher unity. tfk
