Malawi is the second poorest country in the world. One million children are orphans due to HIV and AIDS in a country where poverty overshadows hope. I Am Because We Are sketches out how social and cultural traditions in Malawi help create serious problems for the society. We meet inhabitants, old and young, who talk about how traditions and silence contribute to the spreading of HIV, violence and oppression. I Am Because We Are is a documentary that does not only convey young people’s hopes and dreams for the future but also gives us an indication what the rest of the world can do to help.
