Corps plongés is in some ways a classic story, but with Raoul Peck’s unmistakable signature. Here we find familiar themes like love and the urge to find oneself – but also social divisions, xenophobia, jealousy and man’s concurrent fascination for and fear of death. Peck weaves all these elements into a heartfelt and engaging story. Chase experiences society’s class divisions and their brutal consequences in her job as a forensic expert in New York. Her worldview is strongly influenced by the reality that surrounds her in her job. In addition, she is trapped in a dead end of a relationship, as the mistress of an ambitious and greedy candidate for governor. But the past catches up with her, in the form of her old lover Dmitri, in exile as a Haitian diplomat. Chase’s two worlds cannot be reconciled without consequences for herself and those she loves.
