Canadian filmmaker Garine Torissian takes us on a trip to Armenia, where her ancestors come from. This is a film about Armenia but equally much about Torissian’s highly personal encounter with the country. It is visually demanding but also inviting, both dreamy and realistic. We see fluid sequences of images with many layers of film, as well as drawings and diffuse images of people and landscapes, interrupted by realistic images of everyday people in Armenia telling us about their lives, the whole thing with the director in voice-over as a cohesive element. She touches upon many themes about the country she visits and its history, but it is as if what is said is primarily to support the play with images, Armenian images. The music is ever-present, especially through Zulal, the female vocal group. js
