Mixing drama and documentary, this film tells the remarkable story of Ethiopian marathon runner Abebe Bikila. From his triumph in the 1960 Rome Olympics, barefoot, to the severe car accident that left him a paraplegic. Fighting his way back to strength, he won the gold medal for a cross country sleigh race in Norway ten years later. Bikila was the first African to win a gold medal and died tragically in 1973. Breathtaking shots of the African countryside following Bikila's mental battles enstills the film with both emotional power and cinematic grace. red
