Bi, don’t be afraid! is a thoughtful cinematic exploration of longing, death and childhood. Grounded in the heart of Hanoi, 6-year-old Bi’s favorite place to play is by the neighborhood ice factory. It is hot and ice is a recurring motif in the film. His ill grandfather has recently returned from years abroad and uses ice to dull the painful belly cramps. At first, Bi is scared of his strange grandpa. However, he is soon overcome by curiosity and they gradually develop a close relationship. A frank and sensual debut with harboring secrets is conveyed with impressive visual assurance. Bi, don’t be afraid! is Phan Dang Di´s feature film and won two awards during Cannes 2010. red
