This is low-budget filmmaking with a bleeding heart: A well known Cuban stage piece about greediness amongst the poor, adapted for the screen with limited resources and well known Cuban stage actors. Resulting in a piece in-between tv-play and postmodern comment, where the scenographical limits of locations are compensated through excessive acting style, strong emotions and even stronger words. The humanist ideals of the film are reflected through the female lead, suitably named Illuminada (the enlightened). She wins a new house through a soap manufacturer, but this is by no means the end to her sorrows. mm
