The Colombian civil war captured through children’s eyes. Manuel lives in a remote corner of rural Colombia where the FARC guerrilla is in control. His father tries to keep his family out of politics, but soon ends up in a conflict with the rebels. The children must inevitably deal with the civil war, but they do it in their peculiar childish way. When Manuel’s new football gets kicked onto a minefield, he becomes obsessed with getting it back. However, in this compelling directorial debut, it is not the grim conflict that dominates. The Colors of the Mountain is a poignant film from the children’s perspective: football, school and vibrant hopes for the future overshadow the brutal realities. red
