An intriguing meta fiction reflecting upon the oppression and exploitation of the indigenous people of Latin America. In Icíar Bollain's new feature, we meet a Spanish film crew led by idealistic Sebastian (Gael García Bernal) and his cynical producer Costa (Luis Tosar). They arrive in Bolivia to shoot the ultimate film about Christopher Columbus. At the same time, the indigenous people of the village where the shooting takes place protest against the privatization of water supplies. These real events from 2000 are known as the Cochabamba protests. Against this tumultuous backdrop, the shooting of the film is stopped and the film crew’s convictions are put to a test. By mixing fiction and reality, past and present, Even the Rain shows that both oppression and indigenous rights are relevant issues still 500 years after Columbus. imh
