De dødes dag

The Day of the Dead (Día de Muertos) is a Mexican tradition that honours the memory of those who have passed away, celebrating life through colourful altars known as ofrendas. Decorated with flowers, candles, photographs, and traditional offerings, these altars symbolise the enduring connection between the living and the departed.

This year's altar was created by two Mexican artists based in Norway. Architect Alberto Juárez Lucio designed a boat-shaped structure inspired by Norway's maritime heritage, symbolising the journey between life and death. Artist Lucía Díaz del Castillo curated its traditional elements, bringing together Mexican craftsmanship, symbolism, and ancestral traditions.

The altar is dedicated to Fridtjof Nansen (1861–1930), Norwegian polar explorer, humanitarian, diplomat, and 1922 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, honouring his legacy of exploration, solidarity, and compassion. It is presented as part of the Day of the Dead Festival at Vega Scene (30 October – 15 November 2026), a collaboration between the Embassy of Mexico in Norway, Film fra Sør, and Vega Scene.
