The dystopian vision of the future in George Orwell’s 1984 bears several frightening similarities to the rise of authoritarian regimes around the world today. However, the greatest threat to freedom and human rights in our time does not come from totalitarian oppressors, but from leaders who build their power on populism and deceit to win the support of the majority. While the rule of law is being dismantled, freedom of expression silenced, and minorities persecuted in an increasing number of countries, we still have the tools and opportunities to resist.
In connection with the screening of ORWELL 2+2=5, a 30-minute conversation will be held on dictatorship and democracy. The discussion will feature Gerald Folkvord, political adviser at Amnesty, and Benedicte Bull, political scientist and professor at the Centre for Global Sustainability at the University of Oslo.
The event is organized in collaboration with Amnesty International Norway.
