Enemies of Happiness

A young woman is conducting an extremely dangerous campaign during the first free Parliament election in Afghanistan for many years. Malai Joya (28) is a politician and freedom fighter. She became world famous in 2003 after having criticised leading Afghan politicians at a large meeting for being warlords and drug criminals.

The Danish director Eva Mulvad embarked upon a journey together with Malai Joya. Among various Taliban fractions, highwaymen, trigger-happy men and clan leaders making a living from the production of opium, they moved as women, only protected by their burkas and a few guards. From this material a unique documentary has arisen, about an exceptional woman who defies war, corruption and violence to help pave the way for a democratic society.
