Khadak 01w

Khadak is a groundbreaking story about the indigenous population of Mongolia. We meet 17-year-old Bagi who, together with his family, lives as a nomad on the Mongolian steppe. Bagi has a supernatural connection to the family’s animals and is foretold a bright future as a shaman. Everything goes to pieces, however, when the military one day come to their tipi and tell the family that they have just one day to pack everything before they are forcibly moved. The military claim that a contagious plague is developing in the area. In a hurry, the population is banished to a miserable mining village, their animals are quarantined and their earlier life is rapidly erased. This upheaval sets in motion a violent reaction in Bagi, and he escapes. Cut off from the life he has always lived, he jumps on the first train to the big city. Along the way he meets Zolzaya, a young female thief, and they decide to turn back and fight the military. Together they find the truth behind the so-called plague and instigate a violent rebellion against the authorities.

Khadak is primarily a fascinating surreal journey into an alien culture. The suggestive images, the Nymanesque music and Bagi’s spiritual journey – the entirety of all this turns the film into a peculiar but extremely fascinating experience. The film has received recognition everywhere it has been shown, and during the 2006 film festival in VeniceKhadak was awarded with ‘The Lion of the Future'. Its co-director, Peter Brosnes, has previously made a film trilogy from Mongolia. ls
