Tuya's Marriage
2007, WANG Quanan, 1h 32m
On the Mongolian steppe, Tuya lives with her family who are among the few remaining in a way of life that is in the process of disappearing. After an accident has made her unable to work, she is forced to find a man to take care of her. But Tuya has one condition: the new husband must also take care of her invalid ex-husband and their two children.
The Golden Bear-winning Tuya’s Marriage is a quiet political critique of a materialistic society obsessed with individualism. With warmth and humour, Wang’s third film depicts humankind’s capability for faithfulness, friendship and care. Its marvellous cinematography lends a sweetness and lingering depth to the work of a director whose recurring theme is the hardships of people on the outskirts of society. baa
