Amores Perros-star Gael García Bernal starts out as a director with a film that is seemingly about an upper class scene just outside Mexico City. Christobal (Bernal) has invited his snobbish friends to a barbecue party at the family’s vacation home. When it turns out that his sister has invited her hippie friends the same week-end, turbulence is guaranteed. The relationship between brother and sister is at least as conflicted as the relationship between the two gangs – which we experience as both intense and comical. When Christobal is attracted to a middle class girl he finds much more interesting than his girlfriend, conflicts are further intensified. The whole thing is closely observed by Christobal’s childhood friend who constantly lurks in the background. This is a sharply observed, humorous and entertaining first movie from Mexico film favourite no. 1. red.
