The Man on the Shore opened the world’s eyes to Raoul Peck and Haiti as a film nation. Here, Peck returns to 1960s Haiti and the brutal history that has divided this small island society. The Duvalier family, and Papa Doc especially, has the dismal honour of being some of world history’s most brutal dictators. Through their private army, the Tontons Macoutes, they governed Haiti with an iron hand and any attempt to resist was mercilessly eliminated. We follow the conflict through the eyes of eight-year-old Sarah, who lives in hiding after her parents had to flee the country as political refugees. A true story about ruthless abuse of power and torture. The Man on the Shore is a heart-wrenching and warming film experience.
