Toni Takitani is based on a short story by Murakami Haruki (Norwegian Wood etc.) and shows the author’s distinctive take on loss and loneliness. Ichikawa treats the source material with the utmost respect, with a tenderness and a feeling for the text that we seldom see. Tony Takitani grows up as a lonely child. His mother dies early and his father is an outsider of a jazz musician.

The grown-up Tony finds love for a brief time, in a woman obsessed by clothes. Unfortunately, tragedy is lurking, something that will make Tony understand what absolute loneliness means. Tony Takitani is a film experience of rare poetry, tenderness and completeness. red.
