With Three Monkeys the self-taught filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan adds another chapter to his virtually flawless filmography. Lack of communication seems to be the essence of the Turk’s films, and in this Cannes winner he continues his psychological exploration of the breakdown of human relationships – now between the triangle of mother, father and son. As usual, Ceylan does it with a high degree of introspective tristesse but here also with bursts of uncontrollable anger.

Ceylan has a worked-through, consistent film style – his unmistakable signature – with a total absence of external film music and a static camera that observes the characters from a respectful distance, in long, unbroken takes. Ceylan nevertheless allows himself several meaningful close-ups of his great actors, something that adds a raw and desperate depth to the film. lab This film will be announced by its norwegian title: Tre aper
