Youssou N’Dour has been called Africa’s greatest musician and is doubtless one of its most successful artists. Throughout his musical career, a profound social awareness has co-existed with spirituality and religion. In 2004 he released Egypt, with Islam as the central subject. The record aimed to provide an alternative perspective to Islam, and led to great controversy in his home country Senegal.
