How do you come to terms with the fact that you just maybe might like boys a little better than girls? It’s hard to picture anything more romantic than suppressed and gradually released sentiment, and Leo’s blushing approaches and fears are presented with an unpretentious and becoming lack of sentimentality, while the dialog is economical and wonderfully pointed. This is by no means an Uruguayan Brokeback, and it is not a film out to battle historical or contemporary social mechanisms. It is more a film about daring to insist on your personal space, also beyond the four walls of your bedroom. Leo’s Room is a quiet, but solid, debut. mm
