Ki-young Kim`s Hanyo, or The Housemaid, is regarded as one of the true classics of South Korean cinema. The action revolves around a composer who has an affair with his housemaid while his wife has gone to her parents’ house. The film portrays a time in which households were beginning to be able to afford to hire maids, but many women worried about the consequences for their marriages. Ki-young regarded the small two-story house as a miniature of the world, but his intense, even passionately claustrophobic film is known only to the most devoted film lovers in the west as one of the great accidents of film history. red
