A semi-surreal Indian love story between a farmer and his goat. Laila is the last remaining animal of a lineage that stretches back 500 years. The farmer has sold off the rest of his herd to pay his daughter’s dowry in a coming marriage. Getting Laila pregnant becomes the farmer’s new life mission, as this is crucial to ensure his family’s future. A charismatic performance by lead actor Raghubir Yadav and a rich palette of colours give the film a distinctive, memorable expression. Director Murali Nair handles the themes in his usual absurd and delightful way, but his film also functions as a critical remark on the situation for Indian farmers. bb
