Cut1

«The last samurai tries to save cinema by sacrificing himself for its sake.» (Naderi). Amir Naderi has said that he wanted to make a John Cassavetes film for a Japanese audience. He has succeeded in his goal; Cut became very popular and ended up running for four months in Japanese movie theatres. The film centers on Shuji, a cinephile who allows the mafia to beat him up so he can pay back his brother's debts. Shuji is willing to die for his brother's honour, and for his own art. There is little music in the film, but Naderi uses sound like a character. Cut is at heart an optimistic movie that confirms that cinema is not dead.
