Joko Anwar plays with genres and classical visual techniques in this hard-boiled detective-thriller. The story is set in an unfamiliar city, in a country torn-apart by corruption, unemployment and chaos. The citizens’ dissatisfaction with the state has driven them to abnormal and violent behaviour. We follow the nosy journalist Janus who suffers from narcolepsy. The disease has cost him both his wife and his job. In an attempt to make a scoop, he follows the story of the murder of five men, killed by a group of pedestrians. The gay detective Eros has also become interested in the case, and starts to follow Janus’ leads. Soon they find themselves tangled in a web of murder, old legends and supernatural forces that seems impossible to get out of. Dead Time: Kala is a peculiar thriller unlike any other. References to classic film noir are courageously mixed with elements from both horror as well as the fantasy genre. This is definitely a film that you don’t want to miss! mfe
