By 1964 Shohei Imamura was established as one of the great directors of Japanese New Wave. Intentions of Murder takes a big step step and gives us a portrait of a woman seldom rivaled in the history of film; the chubby, naïve and (seemingly) simple Sadako. All she has known is a life of hardship, first as a servant and then as the unregistered wife of the son of her former employee. One night a burglar rapes her, but while contemplating suicide as tradition demands, she finds an unexpected strength within. As the character of Sadako evolves, so does the film itself. It grows and changes along with her. A milestone in the history of Japanese film! krj
