Punk in Africa
Documentary about punk music as a political measure in South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Punk commonly means anarchism, anti-establishment and general provocation. In South Africa in the 70s and 80s, encouraging multiracialism was the strongest statement a punk-band could make. Punk in Africa examines the role punk music has had in the political upheavals in South Africa. Most interesting is the documentary's final section, in which the South Africa of today is in focus. An emerging generation of bands continue to draw on the legacy of punk and to confront the political challenges of contemporary South Africa. The film merges interviews, band performances, historical photos and concert flyers. rk
