Warriors of the Rainbow tells the epic and blood-drenched story of the incident at Wushe in Taiwan. 300 men from the Seediq tribes rose up against their Japanese occupants in a short, intense war in 1930. This was to be the last major uprising against Japanese rule in Taiwan. Mouna Rudo, head of the Mehebu clan, leads the warriors in giving the occupants one last blow, and to offer blood sacrifice before joining their ancestors on Rainbow Bridge after death. The number of decapitation scenes is astonishing, but it’s never a one-dimensional orgy of violence. Underneath the bloodshed lies a sense of loss as the traditional Saadiq way of life comes to an end.

Wei Te-Sheng revitalized the Taiwanese film industry with his debut, Cape no 7 (2008), and has with Warriors of the Rainbow made the most expensive, and perhaps most ambitious, Taiwanese film so far. Warriors of the Rainbow premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2011, and was a contender for nomination for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2011.
