Director Weerasethakul discovered a book about a man who could recollect his previous incarnations, a story which has inspired him in several movies; and this film is the culmination of his efforts. Uncle Boonmee has a failing kidney, and we follow his last days in his hometown where he has been transferred from hospital. There he recalls some of his previous incarnations and stages of his life. Mutual for the incarnations is that they embody the soul of the landscape and its beings. Completely on its own terms, this movie lets us see these incarnations as part of the cosmos, and in it find a spiritual richness few other movies dare to aim for. This is courageous cinema for courageous people. gil
