The Inseminator
The Inseminator has received international attention for being banned in its home country, Vietnam. The reason for the censorship was not revealed, but it is likely to think that the sexual content, verging on taboo, was part of it.
A rural family work as farmers in a picturesque mountain landscape where mass-produced clothes are the only reminders of our time. The father has a sinking feeling that his life is moving towards the end, and he wants his mentally disabled son to keep the family lineage by inseminating a woman. His continuing failures drives the father close to insanity, and he starts to use extreme measures.
The Inseminator is a minimalistic, monotonous, meditating and sometimes magical portrait of a patriarchy in despair, and the atmosphere of sex, life and death is dreamingly omnipotent.
The Inseminator is Bui Kim Quis' (b. 1983) first feature film. She is educated as a screenwriter at Hanoi Academy of Theatre and Cinema and has been successful as a scriptwriter for both television and film in her native Vietnam. The short film The Sheet won the award for best short film at the Hong Kong Film Festival in 2006.
