Iddrisu is a diligent medical student in the capital of Ghana, but must leave the university and return to his family and his home village Nakom when his father suddenly passes away. On his return he finds out that his father had considerable debt, and the family farm is dry and unused. His little sister is pregnant and his brother lazy and inept. Iddrisu has a responsibility to get things back in shape, but feels the city calling him back to his studies and his girlfriend.
Nakom is about a man pulled between duty and aspiration, self-sacrifice and self-interest. With simple imagery and beautiful local music, it captures a Ghana at the brink of modernity, where old values must be put aside to give the young people the life they actually want.
Kelly Daniela Norris studied film at Columbia University. Her first film, Shades of Blue, was shot on Cuba, and mixed narrative storytelling with memories and travelogues, to honor her late brother. Nakom is her second feature, a collaboration with T.W. Pittman, director, producer and writer with background from the Peace Corps in Ghana.
