As many as 200.000 boys and men are thought to be held as slaves and forced to work in the fishing industry in South East Asia. The fiction feature film Buoyancy gives these people a face and a voice throught its depiction of the destiny of 14 years old Chakra who flees from Cambodia to Thailand to seek better opportunities and an independent life from his farming family. With little dialogue and with suggestive images, director Rodd Rathjen has made Buaoyancy into a poetic thriller that communicates the brutality and sadism real humans actually could have met on board on a Thai fishing vessel, supplying the fishing industry with raw products that later will be processed and sold to the whole world.
