Renoir
In a beautiful Japanese drama, we meet 11-year-old Fuki, who must cope with emotions larger than herself, a stressed-out mother – and a father on his deathbed.
We are in Tokyo in the mid-1980s, where we meet Fuki and her small family. Her father, Kenji, is battling terminal cancer and constantly travels back and forth between the hospital and their home, while her mother struggles to balance a full-time job with caring for her husband. Fuki, however, is not a typical 11-year-old. In the opening scene, we witness a girl with the same name being chased and strangled by a murderer, before Fuki suddenly stands before a speechless teacher, wondering how she could write and present such a morbid school assignment.
As Fuki is increasingly left to her own devices, the line between reality and a vivid imagination begins to blur. Fresh from the main programme at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Renoir is a sensitive, creative and associative portrayal of a young girl’s inner struggle with loneliness and grief.
