A spellbinding, philosophical hidden anime gem with a sparkling new restoration.

In a strange world, a little girl meets a young man. She carries an egg, while he is armed with a cross-like weapon. An angel will one day hatch from the egg, she believes. She vows to protect it, but he is not so patient.

Ten years before he achieved serious international success with the manga adaptation Ghost in the Shell, Mamoru Oshii directed this remarkable cult classic. With sparse dialogue and biblical allegories, he weaves an entrancing, mysterious universe, fully realized through collaboration with artist Yoshitaka Amano. Angel’s Egg is a truly gorgeous film where emotion takes precedence over traditional storytelling.

Originally released as an OVA (original video animation), a term used for direct-to-video anime releases, Angel’s Egg received a limited cinema run. The new restoration had its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 2025, opening many new eyes to one of the most unique animated films from the 80s.
