Volunteer at Films From The South 2021!

Do you love movies? Volunteer at Films from the South in November!

The 31st edition of Films from the South will take place between November 11.–21., and we need volunteers to partake in Oslo’s coolest film festival, with a focus on films from Asia, Africa and Latin America. Submit your application by October 15.

You have to be above the age of 18 to apply and be comfortable with both Norwegian and English. Other relevant languages are also welcome.

To volunteer at this year’s festival you will need a Covid-certificate.

Do you have any questions? Send them to [email protected].

In the sign-up sheet you will be asked to fill in which areas you are most interested in working with, and to write a little about your motivation for volunteering. We can’t guarantee that everyone will get their first pick, but we will do our best to make sure everyone will work with something interesting! The application form is at the bottom of this article.

The volunteer work will mainly take place during the festival dates: November 11.–21., but there will also be a need for help with pre-festival events, posters and rigging. Help with dismantling after the festival is also needed. You will therefore be able to sign up for that if you wish and are available outside the festival dates.

Here are the different volunteer positions:

Guest guide
November 11.–21., day and evening.

Films from the South is visited by international filmmakers, actors and other guests, and as a guest guide your job is to receive and host them while they are in Oslo. You will meet the guests at Oslo airport, answer practical questions and make sure they are at the right place at the right time. You are available to the guests if they need you, and can take the guests on guided tours in Oslo if they wish. You are flexible and can work both during the day and in the evening. It is an advantage if you speak fluent English, and preferably other relevant languages. Indicate which languages you speak in the application form.

Information desk
November 11.–21., during the cinemas’ opening hours.

Do you want to be the face of the festival, in meeting with the audience? You will be present at the cinemas, and you are the audience’s first contact with the festival. Your primary task is to be well informed about the film program and to guide the audience in a good way. You should be able to answer practical questions related to the festival, engage visitors and ensure visibility and availability of information at the cinema. In addition you will be given various practical tasks related to the venues, such as administration of guest lists and tickets, decor, hosting/security, serving and infection control.

Event
Primarily November 11.–21. during the day and evening, but help before and after the festival is also needed.

The event group participates in the practical implementation of all events both before and during the festival, such as opening parties, closing parties, special screenings, talks and receptions. The group is responsible for rigging, serving, guarding, purchasing and other practical tasks – with a common goal of creating a great festival experience for the attendees. You are practical, flexible and can work both during the day and in the evening.

What is your responsibility as a volunteer at Films from the South?

Being a volunteer requires that you get acquainted with the necessary information, show up at the agreed time and contribute as much as you can. It is important to be gentle and welcoming to our festival audience, guests and other volunteers. As a volunteer, you are the face of the festival.

By accepting the conditions for volunteering with us, you agree to work at least 20 hours. We will give a thorough introduction to the infection control routines at our various viewing locations, and it is very important that everyone who works at this year’s festival familiarize themselves with these.

What do you receive as a volunteer?

You get valuable work experience and insight into how a film festival is run, and get to meet many exciting people. The volunteers are invited to a group meeting before the festival. After finishing work, you can get a certificate that documents your participation.

As thanks for your effort, we hope that our volunteers will get to see lots of great films during the festival. Due to covid, there are more restrictions than usual, and the offer will therefore wary between digital and physical screenings. We are working to find a good solution to this.

The efforts of each and every one of our talented volunteers are important to us, and in the application form below you will be asked to state which areas you are most interested in working with, as well as your motivations for volunteering.

Do you want to take part in making this year’s Films from the South a fun and professional festival? Apply as soon as possible!
