The 34th edition of Films from the South will take place from November 9th to 17th, and we need enthusiastic volunteers who want to help us create a film festival! Here you can read about what it means to be a volunteer at the festival. The registration deadline is October 6th.

What does it mean to be a volunteer at Films from the South?

As a volunteer, we expect you to commit to working between 15-20 hours spread over 3-4 shifts during the festival. Films from the South lasts for 9 days, so you’ll have plenty of time to watch lots of great films! After completing your work, you’ll also receive a certificate documenting your efforts.

What benefits do I get as a volunteer?

All volunteers receive merch, five free tickets, and the opportunity to watch films if there are empty seats available at the start of the screening (“drop-in”). You’ll be invited to a kick-off gathering before the festival where we’ll present the program and get to know each other.

As a volunteer at Films from the South, you’ll meet many exciting people, gain valuable work experience, and get insights into what it’s like to run a film festival.

How can I contribute?

When you register in the signup form, we’d like to hear a bit about your motivation for volunteering and your previous experience.

Here are the different tasks you may be involved in as a volunteer:

As a volunteer, you are the festival’s face to the public. You will work at and be responsible for the festival’s info desks at Vika Kino, Cinemateket, or Vega Scene. You should be able to answer practical questions related to the festival, inspire visitors, and ensure the visibility and availability of information at the festival’s venues. You’ll also have various practical tasks related to screenings and the festival area, such as ticket administration, distributing guest accreditation, assisting with clean-up, and managing admissions. At the cinemas, you will help with seating and assist with Q&As and film talks if you feel comfortable with it. You are service-oriented, organized, and prepared for both busy and quiet work periods. It’s not required, but a bonus if you’re comfortable introducing a film screening.

As a volunteer, you can also be involved in the practical execution of events during the festival – such as parties, special screenings, talks, receptions, and outdoor cinema. In these cases, you will help with setting up, providing information, security, purchasing, and other practical tasks – all with the common goal of creating a great festival atmosphere for the audience!

Runner

You may also have some shifts as a runner, which is a flexible job where you move between screening and event venues. The tasks here will vary according to needs; handing out popcorn, talking to the audience, or transporting items from point A to point B.

Before the festival

We also need some help with setup and preparations the week before the festival. This could include distributing pocket programs and helping to decorate the different venues. It’s a plus if you enjoy physical and creative work.

Guest Guide

Films from the South welcomes international filmmakers, actors, and other guests, and as a guest guide, your job is to greet and assist them during their stay in Oslo (museum visits, guided tours, etc.). Guest guides often meet guests at the airport, answer practical questions they may have, and ensure they are in the right place at the right time. You are flexible and can work both day and evening shifts. Please indicate in the registration form which languages you speak.

We hope you will join us in making the best Films from the South Festival yet!
