Love film? Volunteer for Films from the South!
The 35th edition of Films from the South takes place 06.–16.11, and we need engaged volunteers who want to help us make a film festival! Here you can read what it means to be a volunteer at the festival.
Fill out this form to sign up as a volunteer.
What does it mean to be a volunteer at Films from the South?
As a volunteer, we ask that you commit to working 15–20 hours spread over 3–4 shifts during the festival. Films from the South lasts 11 days, so you’ll have time to watch lots of great films! After your work is completed, you can also receive a certificate documenting your contribution.
What are the perks for volunteers?
All volunteers receive five free tickets and, in addition, the chance to see films if there are available seats at the start of the screening (“drop-in”). You’ll be invited to a kick-off/gathering before the festival where we’ll present the program and get to know each other.
As a volunteer at Films from the South you’ll meet many exciting people, gain useful work experience, and get insight into how a film festival is made.
How can I contribute?
When you register in the sign-up form, we’d like to hear a bit about your motivation for volunteering and any previous experience.
Here are the different tasks you may help with as a volunteer:
As a volunteer, you are the festival’s public face when meeting our audience. You’ll work at—and be responsible for—the festival info desks at Vika Kino, Cinemateket, or Vega Scene. You should be able to answer practical questions related to the festival, inspire visitors, and ensure the visibility and availability of information at the festival venues. You’ll also handle various practical tasks linked to screenings and the festival area, such as ticket administration, handing out accreditations to guests, helping with tidying and admissions. When you’re at the cinemas you’ll help with entry and assist with Q&As and film talks if you’re comfortable with it. You are service-minded, organized, and prepared for both hectic and calm periods of work. It’s not required, but it’s a bonus if you’re comfortable giving a short introduction to a screening.
As a volunteer you may also take part in the practical execution of events during the festival—such as parties, special screenings, talks, receptions, and outdoor cinema. You’ll help with set-up, information, stewarding, purchasing, and other practical tasks—with the shared goal of creating a great festival atmosphere for the audience!
Runner
You may also have some shifts as a runner, a flexible role where you can patrol and be moved between screening and event venues. Tasks will vary based on need.
Before the festival
We also need some help with set-up and preparations the week before the festival. This includes, for example, distributing pocket programs and helping decorate the different venues. It’s an advantage if you enjoy physical and creative work.
Guest guide
Films from the South welcomes international filmmakers, actors, and other guests, and as a guest guide it’s your job to receive and follow up the guests during their stay in Oslo (museum visits, guided tours, etc.). Guest guides often meet guests at the airport, answer any practical questions they may have, and make sure they are in the right place at the right time. You are flexible and can work both day and evening. Please indicate in the sign-up form which languages you speak.
We hope you’ll help us make the best Films from the South ever!
