The King Artist Talk Buy tickets

Before the screening of THE KING Wednesday NOV. 16th, 18.00 at Vega Scene director Han Jae-rim will meet film critic Einar Aarvig for a conversation about the director's career. The conversation will be in English and Korean, with a Korean/English interpreter.

Through his career Han Jae-rim has systematically built his reputation as a director who successfully combines commercial appeal with sophisticated direction and storytelling. In our Director’s Special Portrait we will highlight three films from his career. In THE SHOW MUST GO ON (2007) he tells a story about a gangster who just wants to retire and become a normal father and husband. THE KING (2017) takes us to the South Korean power elite, characterized by power struggles and corruption. His latest film, EMERGENCY DECLARATION (2021), is an intense action thriller.

Han Jae-rim has an ability to present unusual situations in a realistic way, and realistic situations in an unusual way. This comes from a great appetite for meticulous and detailed preparations before the shooting of his films, bordering on perfectionism. Every line in the dialogue and every single description in the script fits his vision, and is brilliantly expressed through the performances by the actors and through his art of storytelling. As many may notice, actor Sang Kang-ho – one of South Korea’s greatest actors – can be found in two of the three films we present. This contributes to explain the massive success the director has had in his home country.
