The Other
As a bus, with the lawyer Desouza on board, reaches its destination in the Argentinean countryside, he discovers that the man in the adjacent seat is dead. Juan decides to keep his own life a secret and as some sort of game he will explore another’s life, by first taking the dead man’s name and later take on several new identities as suits the situation. Through what may seem like irrational acts, Juan leaves security behind for an unknown existence. The Other is a film that slowly and poetically explores the desire to be someone else. Through Juan’s little adventure, he rediscovers his own preferences and taste, and he takes what his acquired identity has to offer. The consequences of his actions force him to make choices and rediscover the real values in life. What was supposed to be a normal business trip ends up as something totally different.
The Other, which won two awards during the Berlin film festival, is director and screenwriter Ariel Rotter’s second feature film. With a sophisticated filmic language and solid direction, he makes his mark as a young and promising representative of Argentinean cinema. In his own words, Ariel Rotter describes his film: "Over the years, I believe that all of my films have been about the same subject. From my first short films to El Otro, I am always aware of the time allotted to us in life, and the question of what we do with this time preoccupies me." anm
