This is Raoul Peck’s first feature film and his unique cinematic voice is already present. We follow Joseph, a man who has escaped the terror regime in Haiti where he was jailed for seven years. He tries to create a new life in New York, but the past is catching up with him. After having spotted one of the men who tortured him, Joseph gets obsessed by thoughts of revenge. Using documentary means, the film creates an incredibly realistic atmosphere. Past and present are mixed like in a bad dream. Is revenge really a solution? And who controls the power of revenge? The film balances the incomprehensible with the everyday – the power of memory with a longing to forget and human beings’ insatiable hunt for power and justification. akek
