The Sky, the Earth, the Rain
The film takes us to an island landscape in southern Chile – to a story and a world that could easily have been part of a Norwegian panorama. Here Ana lives, alone with a dying mother dependent on nursing. Life is meagre and consequently people are taciturn. Their most reliable meeting place is on the boat that connects the island to the mainland. Over time, we get to know Ana and some of her neighbours better, in the film's subdued manner. It is as if the climate weighs down on the people, in an everyday life where most keep to themselves, with an only goal of getting by from day to day.
This is a slow, lyrical and visually beautiful experience, conveyed through classical cinematic means, something that, not least, does justice to the rainy landscape. Director José Luis Torres Leiva belongs to a generation of new and young Chilean filmmakers and has previously made independent video productions, documentaries and shorts. El cielo, la tierra y la lluvia is his first feature film. He says the following about the film: This is a film about the blending of man and his environment. I wanted to set it in a very short narrative time span, bathed in silence. This represents an invitation for the audience to build on the tale that I have written for other possible stories which are not related in the film.
