Death of a Bureaucrat is a dark comedy with a macabre starting point: A worker is killed in an accident and is put to rest. His workbook, the very symbol of his proletarian status, is placed in his grave with him. The problem is that his widow needs precisely this book in order to be able to collect his pension. The film is a biting attack on Cuban politics and was banned in its time. Director Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, best known for his successful drama Strawberry and Chocolate, started out as a documentary filmmaker with a clear political agenda, with evident inspiration from italian neo-realism. cinemateket
