You Are All Captains
A free spirited and gracious genre mix from one of the FIPRESCI winners from last year’s Cannes festival. The French-Spanish director Oliver Laxe plays with the inherent possibilities of filmmaking in the charming You Are All Captains. The already blurring boundaries between fiction and documentary are stretched to a maximum in the story about a European filmmaker who travels to the Moroccan city of Tangier in order to establish a film workshop for children. In 2007, the director did the same thing as a newly graduated and adventurous filmmaker. In the film, he steps in and out as alternately a fictionalised main character and himself as a real person. The result is a profound meta-fiction full of raw and childlike passion for the magical world of cinema. red
