Never Die
The morning mist rests like a veil over the canals of Lake Xochimilco. A boat glides silently towards us. In it sits Chayo, returning to her hometown to care for her soon-to-be one hundred year old mother who wants nothing more than to fall into eternal sleep. Enrique Rivero uses silence and minimalism to create a feeling of a place far from space and time, where you are at one with nature. In Never Die he reveals ancient rituals of life and death, practised in perfect harmony with the modern faith of Jesus Christ. Chayo is a strong, atypical woman, who takes upon herself the traditional role of carer, and in doing so finds that her skeletons are no longer in the closet. mcv
