A gunslinger, dressed in black and with a small child clinging to his back ride out of the desert. They dismount and find a teddy bear and a portrait of the child's mother, which they bury in the hot sand as a rite of passage. Then they ride off, back into the desert. The film juxtaposes ultra-violence and Zen-Buddhism in the same scene, as well as the transitory nature of the body and its desires, the power of thought and the power of the weapon, the saviour and the tempter, and the ultimate sacrifice. El topo contains layer upon layer of symbols, metaphors and allusions, and completely evades any linear interpretation, even though it progresses forward with clear objectives. This is Jodorowsky at his best. krj
