Why do we travel? What do we do when we are abandoned by the ones we love? Such questions pervade this unique and inspiring cross between fiction, documentary and experimental film. We follow a young geologist assigned to traveling through the deserted backlands of Northeastern Brazil to make a survey of possible routes for a future canal. The film is his professional and personal travel log, consisting of first-person footage of the places and people he encounters, most of whom will need to be relocated to make room for the canal. As the field trip progresses, his interior monologue becomes more dream-like and confessional. Everything he sees in this melancholy landscape, from rock formations to plants and people, only seems to worsen his state of mind. Simple, though hauntingly beautiful, I Travel ... is a melancholy essay on solitude, love, and atonement. cf
